Olive oil is known for it’s many uses in therapeutic remedies, skin care and delicious meals. Until recently, olive oil has gained notoriety for it’s amazing benefits for healthy hair care on a larger scale. On an average, most of us shed about 50 to 100 strands of hair a day but for some people this shedding can be in excessive amounts. There are many factors that contribute to unhealthy hair fall such as genetics, poor meal plan, meds, using the wrong products, over processing the hair as well as chemicals.
One simple and easy way to minimize excessive shedding and to strengthen the hair at the follicles is through the use of olive oil. Using olive oil as a hot oil treatment is a great way to introduce this natural wonder into your regimen.
Hot oil treatment: Add 2 tbsp of olive oil to an applicator bottle and place it in a cup of hot water for 5 minutes. Test the oil on the inside of your wrist before placing it on your head. Massage the oil into your scalp in circular motions using the pads of your fingers. Cover with a plastic cap and leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse the hair with warm water to help remove any excessive amounts of oil from the scalp. We do not want to clog the pores. Depending on your hair type, you may not need to seal with another oil or butter after applying your leave-in. You can either apply the hot oil treatment as a pre-poo or after your conditioner as a moisture retainer.
Hot oil treatments on a weekly basis, especially during the Fall and Winter seasons, can prove to be very beneficial to the health of your hair. With the presence of antioxidants and the anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties of olive oil, the addition of this wonderful oil to your regimen should help improve blood circulation to the scalp and promote healthy hair growth.
